The New Year's Celebration will be held at Kure Beach Pier on December 31, 2014 at 9PM. Don't miss the giant beach ball being dropped at midnight followed by a spectacular fireworks demonstration. In an Island of Lights tradition there will be a raffle, with the winner taking home the original artwork for the Island of Lights 2014 official Christmas card and ornament. Festival of Trees at the Cameron Art Museum

The Cape Fear Festival of Trees returns as one of the most heart-warming holiday traditions in Wilmington. The Lighting at the Lake Celebration
November 28, 2014
The light up ceremony officially begins the month long Island of Lights Festival in Carolina and Kure Beaches in NC. The Lake is located at the intersection of Atlanta Avenue and Lake Park Boulevard in Carolina Beach, NC. There is parking in a lot at the Lake, at a lot across from the Lake, and on Lake Park Blvd. where indicated. The event is always the night after Thanksgiving and the opening ceremony is at 7 PM. The brief opening ceremony, prior to the actual lighting, will feature the President of The Island of Lights Committee, Pleasure Island elected officials, and musical entertainment. Families can walk one mile around the lake to view the beautiful lighted displays. Santa will visit the celebration and free refreshments will be served prior to Light Up.

North Carolina Holiday Flotilla

The 31st Flotilla weekend will be held on Friday and Saturday, November 28th and 29th. From our humble beginnings thirty years ago, the Flotilla has grown to become one of the top 20 events in the Southeast and a must see family weekend, attracting an estimated 50,000 people to Wrightsville Beach annually. Our weekend kicks off with the fabulous Launch Party held at the Blockade Runner on Friday November 28th, followed by the family friendly Festival in the Park on Saturday November 29th and of course, the spectacular lighted boat parade and increasingly impressive fireworks will be that evening. Area residents both young and old look forward to this annual Christmas Parade. The Christmas Parade will is always the second Friday after Thanksgiving and begins at 7:30 PM. The Parade proceeds from Atlanta Avenue down Lake Park Boulevard to the Federal Point Plaza in Carolina Beach. Island of Lights Christmas Flotilla

Fishing boats and pleasure craft electrically decorated with thousands of lights present a spectacular display on the Intracoastal Waterway. They cruise from Snows Cut to the Carolina Beach Boat Basin and back. The boats compete for prizes and add to the wonderful holiday spirit. This Christmas flotilla always takes place on the second Saturday after Thanksgiving and begins at 6 PM. A panel of judges will be on hand to choose the winners. Bring the family and enjoy the evening at Carolina Beach.

Polar Express Family Shows

The charming holiday classic returns for an 11th season!  This favorite program provides a live reading of the story by WWAY-TV personalities, visit with Santa, all the festive decorations in the Museum and hot cocoa afterward! This Wilmington event is scheduled for December 6, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2014. Shows begin at 4:30PM and at 5:30PM. These shows sell out, so tickets are by prepaid reservation. Come join us at 8 AM Thanksgiving Day before the turkey and traveling for a fun certified 5K run through the Forest Hills Neighborhood in Wilmington, NC! Proceeds benefit Juvenile Diebetes Research Foundation, Full Belly Project, and scholarships at UNCW and cape Fear Community College. TheatreNOW's Wilmington Horror Story features three tales of terror by three very talented local scribes served with a devilishly delicious three-course horror themed meal. “Dine and Dash,” by Anghus Houvouras tells the story of a blind date that turns deadly. Tale number 2 is “Dr. Herbert West: Re-Animator” adapted by Chase Harrison from H.P.Lovecraft classic reanimation tale. Poplar Grove Halloween Festival
October 17-19 and 24-26, 2014
Dare to walk through the Haunted Manor, ride the Haunted Wagon through the deep dark forest, or for the little ones enjoy the Goblins and Games Fun House in the barn. Bring the entire family for food, fun, live music, inflatables, fortune-teller readings, petting zoo, and other favorites.  This year we are featuring Massive Grass and the Possum Creek Bluegrass Band. This is Poplar Grove’s largest fund-raiser of the year. For younger children or families with toddlers, there is a daytime Wagon Ride through the Nature Trail on Saturdays and Sundays starting at Noon and ending at 5:30PM. 5K Zombie Fun Run / Walk

Think you can survive a Zombie Apocalypse?  On Saturday, October 18th, test your skills at Poplar Grove Plantation’s 5K Zombie Fun Run/Walk through the Abbey Nature Preserve trails. The run will begin at 6PM in the parking lot near the Poplar Grove Cultural Arts Barn.  The course covers the scenic views around the Mill Pond and Pine Thicket trails, and will be crawling with Zombies clambering to take your 3 health flags.  Runners who make it to the finish line with at least 1 flag are awarded tickets to our Halloween Festival.  Awards for the top 3 finishers in each category and Overall Male and Female. Batty Battleship's Halloween Bash

Trick or Treat aboard the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA! Batty Battleship, brother Buggy and their friends return to the Battleship for a spooktacular trick or treating time. A lot of fun and no scares it is the best location for the family to share. But don’t be frightened and don’t you fret we promise we’ll provide a zoo with animals to pet. With candy and sweets there’s plenty of treats you’ll be asking yourself what more should I eat. Batty also announces she will have two very special guests this year, Anna and Elsa from “Frozen”. Carolina Beach Double Sprint Triathlon
May 11, 2014
The very first "Formula 1" or super sprint style triathlon in the U.S. The Carolina Beach Double Sprint is now taking over from the Kure Beach Double Sprint. After a 1 year absence from the Pleasure Island, we are bringing it back. Competitors start out with a 375 meter ocean swim. Upon exiting the water, participants put on their running gear at the "Beach Transition Area" and run 1.5 miles to the "Bike Transition Area". Participants then complete a 20K bike ride on a closed course.  Then it's back on with the running gear for the 1.5 mile run back to the "Beach Transition Area".  Participants complete the race by once again swimming the 375 meter course. Rims On The River Vintage Car, Hot Rod, & Motorcycle Show

Rims on the River is an annual event in downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. Cars and motorcycles dating 1980 and older, line the streets of the historic downtown area, with the Cape Fear River and the diverse collection of retail stores as their backdrop. The event has drawn a wide array of cars from the entire southeast region of the state, as well as a few neighboring states, totaling approximately 600 vehicles on display last year and approximately 40,000 attendees. As always the event is free and open to the public. Musical entertainment will be welcoming this year’s attendees to our event, as well as to our downtown area. The Carolina Cup
April 23-27, 2014
The 2014 Carolina Cup kicks off the race season with 4 courses: a kids race, the Harbor Island Recreational “fun” race, a Money Island open race and the dreaded Graveyard Elite Race. In 2012, the Carolina Cup was the largest race on the East Coast with over 400 paddlers competing in the first day of races. In 2013, we had over 600. The Ocean of Hope Cancer Awareness Paddle will be on Sunday. Expect clinics by Danny Ching, Jimmy Terrell, Larry Cain, Jaime Mitchell and PaddleFit. Plan a 5 day weekend and bring the whole family!

The Quintiles Wrightsville Beach Marathon is a unique race. The full marathon is essentially 2 loops of the half marathon course, however there are a few straight aways that runners do 3 times. Firepower at the USS North Carolina Battleship

Learn about and explore the Battleship's 16-inch and 5-inch guns from the gun houses to the ammunition loading compartments; the 40mm and 20mm guns, and the weapons that they replaced (1.10 and 50 caliber guns). The finest guns are of little use without the means to direct their fire accurately at the target. Presenters will discuss the various types of fire control equipment and how main and secondary battery plotting rooms and the combat information center operated.
